In Memory Of Our Poets

Miss Jo Anne Lucci (English, Journalism, Blue & White 1963 -1970s)

Joanne Lucci was born August 23, 1932, to Joseph and Nell Lamar Lucci in Wooster, Ohio. [She died on December 26, 2023].

She was raised in the Capitol Heights area of Montgomery. Over her lifetime she was a member of Capital Heights Church of Christ, University Church of Christ, and Mt. Hebron Church of Christ. She attended Sidney Lanier High School [Class of 1950] before she went on to teach English and journalism there for over 25 years.

She was a die-hard Auburn University fan after both undergraduate and graduate degrees at Auburn. She was a season ticket holder to Auburn football games for over forty years. She often traveled to away and bowl games every chance she got.

Her first job was as a reporter, at the Alabama Journal, but wanting summers off to fish and boat at the lake, she decided to go into teaching. Her first teaching job was at Goodwyn Junior High School.

After retiring from Sidney Lanier, she went on to teach English and Journalism at Faulkner University for several more years, until retiring fulltime to her lake house at Lake Martin. Her last 2 years were spent at CaraVita Retirement Village in Montgomery.

Her hobbies were anything outdoors: from feeding wildlife to being a lifetime owner of dogs and cats. She loved planting flowers and any activity on the lake. She also loved painting and creating things. She always owned a boat and spent her time skiing and fishing. She also had a love for travel but had a fear of flying. She made many trips on Amtrak, both in the U.S. and Canada.

She is survived by her cousins Lon Conner, Rose Beasley, Celia Lett, and Frank Quinn and by many close friends, brothers, and sisters in Christ.
