Dr. James Zachry "Zac" Perry (1920-2014) - Class Of 1938

Dr. James Zachry 'Zac' Perry , born on January 21, 1920, husband of the late Carolyn Mobley Perry, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the age of 94.

Zac 's parents were Dr. Frank Flowers Perry and Blanche Smart. He is survived by Zac Perry, Jr. & Mickey Perry, March Perry & Mary Taylor-Perry, Craig Perry & Sue Perry, Steve Mobley, and Dave Mobley; 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Evelyn Perry in 2012. 

Zac grew up in Montgomery and attended Starke Academy, Cloverdale, Lanier and Marion. He attended the US Naval Academy for two years and then went to Auburn, where he graduated with a BS degree.

He married Virginia Eve Marchman after graduation.

He served in the Army in the Second World War and was wounded in combat while with the 141st Infantry Regiment, part of the 36th "Texas" Division in Southern France. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Some highlights of his civilian life include being a highly successful insurance salesman, a member of the Montgomery Board of Education, a teacher at Capital Heights Junior High School, obtaining his Masters Degree from Auburn, and his PhD from University of Alabama.

He served as the Dean of Students at Southern Union and was later the President of the American College in Guayaquil, Ecuador. When he moved back to Montgomery, he worked for the Alabama Department of Education evaluating teachers and teaching them how to teach. He loved Ballroom dancing, Crossword puzzles and was the best joke teller ever.

A memorial service will be held at Wesley Gardens Retirement Community, 1555 Taylor Road, Montgomery, AL 36117, on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 2PM.
