Charles Leonard McMurtrey, Jr. (1936-2014) - Class Of 1955

Charles Leonard McMurtrey, Jr., of Montgomery, Alabama passed away peacefully at his home on November 13, 2014, surrounded by his family. 

Charles was born in Montgomery, Alabama on September 4, 1936 as the third of five children of the late Charles Leonard McMurtrey, Sr., and Dezma Cook McMurtrey. Charles served his country in the United States Navy from 1956 until 1961 and resided in Redwood City, California, until he returned to Montgomery in 1968. He owned and operated, along with his brother Fred, McMurtrey Shell Station in Montgomery for over 30 years. He was a loving husband and father who will be remembered for his love of family and friends.

Charles is survived by his wife, Melva Ann of 53 years; his sons, Charles Leonard McMurtrey, III and wife, Deborah of Athens, AL; Steven Paul McMurtrey and wife, Serena of Millbrook, AL; daughter, Stacy McMurtrey Pease and husband, Gordy of Columbus, GA; sisters, Sarah Arnold of Stillwaters, AL, Jeanette Truitt of Montgomery, AL; Sue Prichett of Montgomery, AL; and brother, Fred McMurtrey of Montgomery, AL; grandchildren, Jacob McMurtrey, Charles Pease, Jack Pease, Brooke McMurtrey, Gordy Pease, Rebecca McMurtrey, and Charles L. McMurtrey IV; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on November 16, 2014, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Leak Memory Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jay Wolf officiating. Graveside services will follow immediately after at Greenwood Cemetery with Military Honors rendered.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Charles Leonard McMurtrey, Jr., to the Montgomery Cancer Clinic- 4145 Carmichael Road- Montgomery, AL 36106.
