In Memory Of Our Poets

William Michael Watson - Class Of 1969

William Michael Watson, 72, a Montgomery native, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on March 22, 2024. Mike was preceded in death by his wife Debbie Watson, his parents Virginia and Murray Watson, and his brother Walt Watson. His children survive him Smith Beevers (Jonathan), Will Watson (Tyler), Mallory Searcy (John), and Mason Watson. Mike also leaves a legacy in his seven grandchildren Weston, Ann Colin, and Kate Beevers, Emma and William Watson, and Tripp and Walker Searcy.

Mike was a member of the inaugural graduating class of Jefferson Davis High School in 1969 where he served as senior class president. Upon graduation, Mike attended Auburn University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and received a degree from the School of Architecture. He began his career in Montgomery working with his father at Wiatt, Watson, and Cole in 1974. In 1980, Mike, his father, and Mike Rutland established the firm 2WR Architects where he practiced for the remainder of his architecture career. Because of his love of design and creating, Mike was instrumental in revitalizing and developing Montgomery's downtown entertainment district.

Mike was an active member of AIA Montgomery serving as a past president. He was also an active Rotary Club member and a lifetime Auburn Alumni Association member. Mike has an immense love for entertaining and travel, but perhaps his greatest passion was Auburn University.

Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. to be followed by a memorial service at 2:00. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mike’s honor to Respite Ministry at First United Methodist Church at 2416 West Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, Alabama 36106.
