In Memory Of Our Poets

Merrell Wilson (-2012) - Class Of 1943

Merrel Wilson, the youngest son of Thomas Henry Wilson and Annie Margaret O'Neill was born in New Orleans, LA. He moved to Montgomery, AL in Jr. High School, and after graduating from Sidney Lanier, he enlisted in the Navy and served as a Hospital Corpsman (Medic with Independent Duty) in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After returning from the war he married Josephine Sanders and had 3 sons, Michael, Bradford, and Craig (deceased). He later married Jean Campbell of Montgomery. That marriage ended in divorce.

True to his medical interests, he spent a 35 year career in pharmaceuticals with Durr Drug Company and after his retirement moved to Houston, TX to be closer to family. He loved to dance, particularly the jitterbug, and he loved the game of golf. He always raked his own traps and repaired his ball mark and two more. The game obviously loved him back as he recorded 6 hole-in-ones. Those who knew him will never forget his swing.

He is survived by his sister, Marion Perilloux of Houston, TX, his sons Bradford Wilson of Montgomery, Michael (Mary) O'Neill of Marina del Rey, CA; three granddaughters, Ella, Annie, and Molly O'Neill. He is also survived by a special Friend, Lelia Lanahan of Humble, TX.

A Memorial service will be held at St Stephen's Episcopal Church in Birmingham, AL on Friday, March 2. 2012 at 2pm.
