Peggy Amanda Murphy (Holley) - Class Of 1943

Peggy Amanda Murphy Holley died peacefully at age 102, May 26, 2025, at Wesley. Gardens Assisted Living, Montgomery, Alabama.

Peggy was born at Pine Level Road, Butler County, AL, outside of Greenville, AL December 13, 1922. She loved life on the farm. The family moved to Montgomery in 1938. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and worked in retail at the Alabama Fair in Montgomery. Peggy served in the U.S. Navy WAVES from 1943 to 1946 at the Postal Division in Atlanta. She married Richard Holley on March 16, 1946. As a military wife, she toured with the family, including Indianapolis, Columbia, SC, and Kaiserslautern, Germany. She was active in the Protestant Women of the Church in Germany, where she learned flower arranging. After Richard retired, they settled in Wetumpka. Peggy and Richard were long-time active members of First Baptist Church, Montgomery. She was a founding member of the Caring Center. She taught Sunday School and was active in the Church until her late nineties. Peggy was employed by the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the State of Alabama for 12 years, rising to supervisor. She was an avid gardener, an active member of the Garden Club, and loved creating her garden at Jasmine Hill Road, Wetumpka. Peggy also worked out regularly at the Wetumpka YMCA and was still doing so with friend and trainer, Lamar Parker, at 101.

She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph Watts Murphy (1899-1963) and Otie May Garrett Murphy (1899-1999), her brother, Joseph Watts Murphy (1930-1944), and sister, Jean Ingram Murphy (1924-2000) (James E. Meacham 1915-1993), and her husband Richard T Holley (1920-2008). Her daughters survive he:r Jane (Richard Schneider), Lisbeth (Frank Stephens) and Margaret Ann (Richard Martens), nephew James Edward Meacham (Ellen Kirksey), grandchildren Amanda Garrett Cousins and Max Bottaro (Dayna Santos), grand-nephews Blake Meacham (Megan), Clarissa Meacham (Lyn), Luke Meacham (Lily) and great-grandson Owen Enzo Bottaro.

The family graciously thanks the staff at Wesley Gardens and Amedysis Hospice, and especially the devoted caregivers from Answered Prayer, for their care over the last few years. And for the Elder Ministry of the Baptist Foundation, including Tom Randall, Larry Lane, John Ashworth, and Rodney Bledsoe. An enormous thanks to Jo Coleman, financial advisor, bookkeeper, and devoted friend for the last decade. Her constancy and faithfulness are appreciated immensely. Thank you to all her faithful visitors over the years. She loved you all so very much. Ashes to be interred at Oakwood Cemetery Annex, Montgomery, with her husband Richard.

Celebration of Life Service to be held on August 14, 2025, at 1 P.M. at Stakeley Sanctuary, First Baptist Church, Montgomery.
