Freshman Baseball and Basketball Coach

One of the most respected and dedicated coaches in Duke athletic history, Herschel Caldwell served Blue Devil athletics for over 40 years. Caldwell came to Duke in 1930, one year before the legendary coach Wallace Wade. Caldwell played for Coach Wade at the University of Alabama and was twice (1925, 26) named All-Southeastern Conference end. He also led the Crimson Tide to two Rose Bowls. Upon arriving at Duke, Caldwell assumed the duty of freshman football coach. His 1930, '32, '34 '35 and '38 teams went undefeated and won North Carolina Big Five Championships. In all, Caldwell's freshman teams compiled an excellent 46-9-5 record. He also coached Duke's freshman basketball and baseball teams during his early yeas. In 1942 he was elevated to junior varsity coach, and he was promoted to varsity end coach in 1946. Caldwell retired in 1971 after 41 yeas of uninterrupted service, the third longest such stint in Duke athletic history. Only Eddie Cameron and Ted Mann served more consecutive years. Coach Caldwell fondly recalls the 1938 team as his greatest experience at Duke. That Blue Devil team went into the Rose Bowl unbeaten and unscored upon, only to lose the contest to Southern California, 7-3, when the Trojans scored with just 40 seconds left in the game.
