Charles Harris Tyus, Sr. (1944-2018) - Class Of 1963

Charles Harris Tyus, age 73, of Tallassee, Alabama, died peacefully on April 17, 2018, surrounded by family in the home of his daughter in Montgomery, Alabama. Mr. Tyus was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gayle Thomas Tyus, his son, Charles Harris Tyus, Jr. of Montgomery, his brother, Larry Tyus of Winchester, TN, his sister, Phoebe Roberson of Montgomery, and his mother and father, Pauline and Hanford.

Charles was born September 16, 1944, in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Pauline Hill Roberson and Hanford Lee Tyus. He retired as a Captain in the Montgomery Fire Department after 20 years of service, then spent an additional 20 years serving at Jackson Hospital in the Plant Operations Department. He enjoyed carpentry, fishing, hunting, playing dominoes and card games with his family and friends, and especially enjoyed spending time with his only grandchild, Garrett.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Tyus Cook (Randall), of Montgomery, his sisters, Mary Hassey (Wes) of Wetumpka, AL, Joanne McCuiston, (Phil) of Huntsville, AL, Kathy Jones (Buddy) of Huntsville, AL, and Alicia Pettis (Roy) of Gurley, AL. He is also survived by his brothers, Jimmy Tyus of Huntsville, AL, Jackie Tyus of Lincoln, AL, and his grandson, Garrett Tyler Edge of Montgomery, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and acquaintances are invited to visitation Sunday, April 22 at 12:00 p.m. in White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, Montgomery, Alabama. Funeral service will commence at 1:00 p.m., with the Rev. John Coleman, officiating. Interment will follow immediately in Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Montgomery or Jackson Hospital Foundation.
