Dr. William Marvin Johnson, Jr., age 77, passed away peacefully with family at his side on March 17, 2016 at DCH Regional Medical due to complications from cancer. He was predeceased by his father, William Marvin Johnson and mother, Elsie Robinson Johnson.
He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Karla Stringfellow Johnson; cherished sister, Carol Elsie Brooks (Douglas); and dear brother-in-law, Gary William Stringfellow (Anita). He was the adored father of Elizabeth Troyer (Clark) and Meredith Johnson (Susan); beloved grandfather to Joseph and Olivia Troyer and Isla and William Johnson; and uncle to several nieces and nephews.
A native of Montgomery, Marvin graduated from Sidney Lanier High School. After receiving his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Alabama, he pursued further studies in music theory and composition at Princeton University where he earned a Ph.D. As Associate Professor of Music, he was a dedicated teacher and mentor who gave his time and energy to his students, the University and State of Alabama for thirty-four years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Forest Lake United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Reid Crotty, Rev. James Haskins and Rev. Kevin Thomas. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.
Honorary pallbearers are The Seekers Sunday School Class and Chancel Choir of Forest Lake where Marvin was a faithful parishioner and choir member.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made in Marvin's memory to the American Cancer Society .
