James "Jimmy" Crenshaw Shepard, Jr. , PhD (1940-2010) - Class Of 1958

SHEPARD, James Crenshaw Jr., PhD, died unexpectedly September 19, 2010. Father Patrick Driscoll will celebrate a memorial mass on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at St. Peter's Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. A reception for family and friends will follow in the Parish Hall. He was preceded in death by his father, James, Sr. and his mother Beth Lamar; he is survived by his wife of 32 years, Judith Reynolds, daughters Angela Ashcraft (Christopher), Penelope Taylor (Joseph), grandchildren: Carson Ashcraft, Davis Ashcraft, Hunter Taylor, Mackenzie Taylor, Brother Frank Shepard (Kathy), sisters Elizabeth White and Diane Fitzsimmons (Jay) and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dr. Shepard was born in Montgomery on July 23, 1940. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and Huntingdon College. He received a master's degree in Romance Languages from The University of Alabama, a master's degree in French from Auburn University and a Ph.D in French from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught French and Spanish at several colleges and universities. Everyone who knew Jim appreciated his astonishing intelligence, his wit, and his ear and gift for languages. He was passionate about his family, his faith, his teaching, and Auburn Football. In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church organ fund or Burse Club (fund for future priests) 219 Adams Avenue, Montgomery, 36101 - or a charity of choice.
