Elizabeth Juliette Clinkscales (Graves) (1922-2021) - Class Of 1940

Mrs. Elizabeth Juliette Clinkscales Graves passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021. She was born on June 13, 1922, in Montgomery, Alabama to Julian Edgar Clinkscales and Mary Anderson Gilreath Clinkscales.

She was born and grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. She graduated in 1946 from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now known as Auburn University. She was one of the first women to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering there. She remained a big Auburn fan all her life.

She met her husband Joel Graves at Auburn, and they married on March 22, 1947, in Greer, SC. He preceded her in death on October 10, 2001. After his death, she moved to Marietta, GA to live near her daughters.

She was a homemaker, spending most of her life raising children in Sylacauga, AL. She often took her children to the library and instilled a love of reading in all of them. Along with her husband, Joel, she took their children on many camping trips and gave them a life-long love of the outdoors.

She was creative and worked with her hands. She did china painting, furniture refinishing and caning, painting, knitting, and sewing. Family history was a big interest as well as gardening. She enjoyed long drives with her husband, visiting family, exploring the countryside, and visiting flea markets.

She often read her Bible and loved her church and her Lord. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sylacauga for 45 years and a member of First Baptist Church Marietta for nearly 20 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Margaret Juliet Graves Kinkead and Lillian Elizabeth Graves Huffman both of Marietta, GA; sons, Jefferson Ernest Graves of Opelika, AL, and James Edgar Graves (Shalann) of American Fork, UT; grandchildren, Patrick Allen Kinkead (Lynzi) of Yilan, Taiwan, Breanna Marie Kinkead of Marietta, GA, Kristan Joseph Kinkead (Briana) of Louisville, KY, Jessica Mae Kinkead of Red Bank, TN, Raymond Allen Huffman of Shawnee, OK, Joel Russell Huffman (Jennifer) of Austin, TX, Mary Elizabeth "Emmie" Huffman-Scott (Wade) of Woodstock, GA, Miranda Abby Graves Tew (Calvin) of Spanish Fort, UT, and Shelby Elizabeth Graves of St. George, UT; great-grandchildren, Ahnna Skelly, Sielei LeFevre, Kaleb Kinkead, Ryan Roberts, Finnegan Kinkead, Sam Kinkead, and Fisher Kinkead.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Joel Graves; sisters, Emma Clinkscales, Mary White, and Ria Jane Chiepalich; brothers, Jeff Clinkscales and Julian Clinkscales, Jr.

Mrs. Graves will be buried beside her husband at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery near Alexander City, AL. Graveside service will be held for children and grandchildren.
