Martha Sturgis (Broughton)1926-2015) - Class Of 1944

Martha Sturgis Broughton, 88, a long-time resident of Montgomery passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Elliott Pou Broughton, her parents Aubrey and Evelyn Sturgis, and her five siblings Dorothy Pruett, Robert Sturgis, Mae Jones, twin Ernest Sturgis, and Aubrey Sturgis.

Mrs. Broughton is survived by her children, Debbie Payne, Richard Broughton (Caroline), Lynn Boak (Charles), all of Montgomery and Ann Pugh of Andalusia; grandchildren, Lee Payne (Jeanmarie) of Boulder, CO; Matthew Payne (Stephanie) of Melbourne, Australia; Carol Greenwell (Justin) of Land-O-Lakes, FL; Amy Plunkett (Matt), Tom Broughton (Jana), Chad Boak (Christy), and Katie Broughton all of Montgomery; Mitch Pugh and Megan Pugh of Andalusia; 11 great-grandchildren, Kiya, Lena, and Ella Payne; Avery Payne; Cole and Evan Greenwell; Thomas and Reese Broughton; Mason Plunkett; and Lena and Ava Boak.

Martha is also survived by her longtime caregiver, Latanya Smith.

Mrs. Broughton was born in Montgomery, Alabama on September 1, 1926. She graduated from Lanier High School in 1944 and attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

Martha married Elliott Broughton on August 16, 1947 at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery where they were longtime members. She was active for many years sewing and smocking clothes for the church's yearly bazaar. Martha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and the wonderful cook of famous "Sunday Lunches" for her family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery with Rev. Chad Boak officiating.

Pallbearers include Lee Payne, Matt Payne, Tom Broughton, Matt Plunkett, Justin Greenwell, and Mitch Pugh.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Stegall Seminary Scholarship Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 241661, Montgomery, AL 36124.
