B. Woodfin Cobbs (1927-2006) - Class Of 1944

Dr. B.W. Cobbs, Jr. died at home Saturday, November 11th , 2006. He was a devoted father, husband and friend and will be greatly missed. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama on April 12th, 1927. He served as a corpsman in the U. S. Navy during the final year of W. W. II. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Harvard Medical School. He trained in cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and also at the Graduate Hospital in London, England. In 1958 Dr. Cobbs joined the faculty of Emory University Medical School where he was a well beloved doctor and teacher for over 40 years. Dr. Cobbs, along with his wife Honor Cumming of Dundee, Scotland was a long time supporter of the Atlanta Symphony, the Olmsted Society, the Georgian Chamber Players, The Emory Friends of Music, and the GA Nature Conservancy. Dr. Cobbs was a consummate gardener and a great lover of medieval art and architecture. He and his wife loved to travel around the great cathedrals and churches of Europe photographing the carvings, stained glass, and beautiful buildings. He passed his love of music, gardening and art to his children, He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Honor, and their three children: Lucy Bailey and her husband Keith and granddaughters Honor and Alyxandra of Largo, FL; Dr. Melissa Cobbs and her husband Dr. Chris Walls and grandsons, Landon, Trystan and Jackson of Savannah, GA; and B. Woodfin Cobbs, III and his wife Vanessa and granddaughters, Sydney and Susie of Detroit, MI. Also surviving him are his sister Lee and her husband Dr. Lamar Rencher of Fairhope, Al; their daughter, Dr. Laura Rencher and her husband Brian Smith of Alpharetta, GA and their daughter Isabel; their son David and his wife Shelby of Fairhope, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Friends of Music at Emory, Department of Music, 1804 Burlington Rd., Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322. A musical memorial and celebration of his life will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church at 634 W. Peachtree Street on Tuesday.
