Montgomery Police confirmed the death of former Montgomery Police Chief John Wilson.
They learned through his family that he passed away while away from his home.
There are no more details at this time.
A memorial service for the late Police Chief John H. Wilson III will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at Frazer United Methodist Church, 6000 Atlanta Highway.
Officiating will be the Rev. E. Baxter Morris, senior pastor of First Baptist Church and Montgomery Police Department chaplain. Members of the Montgomery community are welcome to attend.
Chief Wilson, who served as MPD chief from 1986 until his retirement in 2004, died Saturday, July 16, while visiting out of state. He was 62.

Former Montgomery Police Chief John Wilson died this morning of unknown causes, according to the Department of Public Safety.
According to Facebook posts from friends and family, Wilson died at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
Wilson was chief of the Montgomery Police Department from 1986 to 2004.
"It is with sadness that today, Saturday July 16, 2016, the Montgomery Police Department has confirmed the death of retired Montgomery Police Chief John Wilson. The Department has learned through Chief Wilson's family that he passed away while away from his home. There are no known specifics related to Chief Wilson's death at this time. Details for Montgomery services will be announced at a later time," reads a statement from the Department of Public Safety.
