James Luther (Jimmy) Mathis, class of 1973, died November 23, 2021, after an 8-year battle with lymphoma. He lived in New Orleans and is survived by his children—Meg (23), Jack (22), and Joe(20) Mathis; his mother, Patricia Mathis; and sister, Paula Mathis, Class of 1970, both of Montgomery.

I knew Jimmy initially from Normandale United Methodist Church then through Termite and Pee Wee YMCA football. Jimmy was a great wrestler while at Lanier along with serving as a very hard working Manager for the Varsity football team. Jimmy was one of the most kind guys I have ever met. He always had only compassionate words for those he encountered. He also had a keen desire to compete and always to give 110% no matter what he was doing. We lost touch after high school. I am sorry to just learn of his long battle and ultimate demise. Nevertheless, I know Jimmy is with the Lord and finally at rest in comfort and joy.... Eddie Parker
