In Memory Of Our Poets

Danny Speigner - Class Of 1967

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Danny Speigner, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, coach, and friend, on July 16, 2024, at the age of 75. Born on November 4, 1948, Danny's life was marked by unwavering dedication, kindness, and a profound impact on everyone who knew him.

Danny played football at Sidney Lanier High School where he was a member of the first Alabama High School State Championship team and was named a first-team Prep All-American in 1966. He went on to play at Auburn University where he protected Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Pat Sullivan, and was named the 1970's Team of the Decade Left Tackle. While playing at Auburn, he married his high school sweetheart, Debbie, in December of 1970.

After graduating from Auburn, Danny and Debbie moved to Montgomery where he started a successful career in the construction business. In 1976, they moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he became a partner in SRD Construction, and was an active member of AGC and ABC.

Danny and Debbie raised their two children, Brent and Jamie in Vestavia Hills. His dedication to his family was evident in every aspect of his life, and his love for them was immeasurable. His passion for sports extended beyond his playing career, as he left an enduring legacy coaching countless kids in recreational baseball and basketball, and winning several baseball state championships along the way. Known affectionately as "Coach" by his friends and grandchildren, Danny's mentorship and guidance helped shape the lives of many young men who always called him "Coach" as they grew older. He loved and cherished those years of coaching and became a #1 fan watching his two boys compete all through high school and then into college.

After moving to Destin, Florida (Miramar Beach) in 2004, he continued selling construction products but mostly enjoyed playing golf in his men's group and with Debbie regularly. Danny was an avid golfer, and was dang good at it, as he shot his age or better multiple times just in the last year.

His grandchildren, Addie, Bo, and Calvyn held an incredibly special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He was their "Coach" and his memory will forever be in their hearts. He very much loved and treated his two daughters-in-law, Christie and Lindsey, like his own daughters.

Many people will tell you Danny was the best man they ever knew, a testament to his character. The influence he had on people. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering belief in and support of his family will be deeply missed by them and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Danny was an active member of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church and attended Good News Methodist Church in Miramar Beach, FL.

Danny was pre-deceased by his father Jesse James Speigner; his mother Martha Elizabeth Speigner; his brothers Jimmy and Steve; his brother-in-law Buddy "Papa" Berry

Danny is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Debbie; his children, Brent (Lindsey) and Jamie (Christie); his adored grandchildren, Addie, Bo, and Calvyn; his sisters Charlotte Stowers (Sonny) and Diane Berry; many loved nieces and nephews
