Mrs. Caraly Moorhead Sumners (Spanish)

Caraly Moorhead Sumners was born October 14, 1946, in Drew, Mississippi, and suc­cumbed to cancer October 30, 2007, in Montgomery, Ala­bama.  She was the daughter of the late Henry and Lou Mize and the late Milton Moorhead.  She graduated from Booneville High School in 1964 and Mississippi Sate College for Women, now Mis­sissippi University for Womenin 1968.  She completed two Masters' Degrees, one in Edu­cation at Mississippi College and another in Counseling Education at Auburn Mont­gomery.  She was a member of Heri­tage Baptist Church.  She devoted most of her time to teaching and nurturing young minds in her Spanish classes at Sidney Lanier High School.  In her spare time, she enjoyed cheering on her stu­dents at various sports activi­ties.  Prior to teaching at Lan­ier, Caraly worked for the Counsel on Substance Abuse and the Sunshine Center.  When asked what her pur­pose was in life, she said ''I'm here to be there for anyone who needs me.''  This is how she lived her life, giving her all for the sake of others.  Dur­ing her extended hospital stay, whenever she was asked if she needed anything she often responded, ''Peace and kind words.''  Caraly is survived by her hus­band Dr. William E. Sumners and beloved children, John Sumners of Manila, Phillipines, Cara Leon and her husband 1st Lt. Nathanael Leon of Jacksonville, NC, and Sarah Sumners of Columbus, Missis­sippi.  She is also survived by her brother, Milton Moorhead of Seattle, Washington, and by a hosts of nieces, neph­ews, cousins, friends, Jesters,and her beloved pets and grandpets Ted, Max, Mattie, Mrs. Kitty, Nero, Buster, Julio and Princess.  The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, No­vember 3rd from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 4th, at 2:00 pm at Heritage Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Stepp of West Palm Beach, FL officiating.  Burial will follow at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home.  We encourage all to attend, especially her friends, col­leagues, former students and anyone else whose life she touched.
