Wilma Gentry (Powell) (1920-2006) - Class Of 1939

POWELL, Wilma Gentry, 86, died April 21, 2006, in Fairhope, Alabama, after a lengthy illness.  She was a lifelong resident of Montgomery.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frank D. Powell Jr.; her parents, Laura Kate and Wilbert Gentry of McCalla; sisters, Jessie Dean, Lucille, Lotis, Garner, Margaret, Cora Mae; and brother, Milford.  She is survived by her children Marcia (Graham) Sanford, Catherine Laura (Ron) Hanks, and Frank D. Powell, III; grandchildren, James H. Lewis, John D. Sanford (Jennifer Thompson), Mary Owen Sanford McLemore, Jason Hanks (Anna) of Baton Rouge, Gentry Hanks of Baton Rouge; and great-grandsons, Jackson Thompson Sanford and Tristan Cade Dunlap; nieces, Jane Gentry, Patricia Robertson, Sheila Burwell and Magie Little.Wilma graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1939.  She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.  She was a member of Anne Phillips DAR Chapter and the Woodley Country Club where she was an avid golfer.  Her quick wit and zest for life blessed all who knew her.  Wilma loved and was beloved by all her children and grandchildren and she will be greatly missed. Wilma will be buried next to her husband Frank in a private graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery.  The service will be conducted by the Rector Doug McCurry and the associate Rector Alan Reid of the Legacy Anglican Church Montgomery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Cross Episcopal School, 2044 Bell Rd., Montgomery, AL 36116, Little Sisters of the Poor, 1655 McGill Ave., Mobile, AL 36664, Montgomery AIDS Outreach, 820 W.
