Emil Joseph "E. J. " Meyer, III (1922-2008) - Class Of 1940

MEYER, Emil Joseph, III, (''E.J.''), 86, a lifelong resi­dent of Montgomery, died peacefully at his home sur­rounded by his wife and close neighbors and friends on May 22, 2008.  E.J. was born April 22, 1922, the son of E.J. Meyer, Jr., and Miriam Blumenfeld Meyer, and grandson of Emil J. and Eda Hirschfeld Meyer, also of Montgomery.  He was prede­ceased by his parents and his sister, Joan Meyer Cain, as well as by a host of dear friends.  He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Ma­mie Mock Meyer; by niece, Barbara Richman, by Bar­bara’s children, Stephanie and Scott and her grandchil­dren, Jack and Megan, all of Memphis; and by friends of all ages.  E.J. attended local schools, from Ms. Buckalew’s Blue Bird School (with lifelong friend Tharpe Forrester) through Lanier High School, graduating in 1940. He at­tended the University of Ala­bama for approximately three years as an active member of Zeta Beta Tau so­cial fraternity before joining the Army on active duty in Eu­rope in World War II.  After working in his father’s insur­ance business, he began along career in various related fields and attended Jones Law School.  E.J. was strongly dedicated to his God, coun­try, family and fellow man.  He honored his family’s reli­gious traditions, worshipping at Temple Beth Or, though fre­quently visiting Baptist Churches with his wife.  E.J. appreciated the warm wel­come extended to the cou­ple by both faiths.  He en­joyed the wonders of God’s creation as an avid fisher­man, gardener and member of the Rose Society.  E.J. support­ed our troops by active life­time membership in the Vet­erans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.  He served his community through vari­ous organizations, including the Exchange Club.  He sup­ported his family and friends through selfless commitment.  E.J.’s memory will be honored in services at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Leak-Memory Chapel with Rabbi Elliot L. Stevens officiat­ing and with special music by Clare Weil, violinist.  Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m.Interment will be at Oakwood Eternal Rest Cemetery. LEAK-MEMORY CHAPEL DIRECTING.
