In Memory Of Our Poets

Judy Lynn Ashurst (Cotton) (1948-2016) - Class Of 1966

Judy Lynn Ashurst Cotton, 67, of Troy Alabama, passed away in her home in the company of family and friends on Wednesday the 25th of May 2016. Judy was born on the 27th of July in 1948 in Montgomery, Alabama as the middle child of Walter and Julia Anne Ashurst of Montgomery. She attended Sidney Lanier high school and later Troy State University where she met and fell in love with a star running back on Troy State's Red Wave football team from Arlington, Georgia. They fell in love and were married in what has been described as a fairy tale wedding on the 12th of July in 1968.

Over the course of her life Judy was known for many things, but chief among them were her undying devotion to her children and her love of our savior Jesus Christ. Judy was also known to be an incredible cook. Among her favorite things to cook were cakes, breads, and anything else that could satisfy her very sweet tooth. Her other passion was sewing and while she could sew almost anything, she truly excelled at making hand-made heirloom outfits for the children of family and friends. Over the years when asked by family members why she didn't try to sell the dresses she would always respond that they were "stitches of love and could not be sold."

Judy is survived by her children Jeff Cotton, Jr. (Allison), Julia Anne King, Joy Cotton (Stephen), and Johnathon Cotton (Julie); her grandchildren Ellie and Wilson Cotton, Meghan and Emily Anne King, Barrett Cotton, Jasper Cotton, Augustus Cotton, and Jacob Huff and Riley Cotton; her sister Vivian Mason and brother Walter Ashurst, Jr. Judy is preceded in death by her parents Walter and Julia Anne Ashurst.

Visitation will be held at Green Hills Funeral Home in Troy on May 31st, 2016 from 10 until 11 AM. The funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Montgomery at 2 PM later that day, with Reverend Robert Wisnewski, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery. Pallbearers will be Brandt McDonald, Mike Ashurst, Walter Mason, Mason McDonald, Emily Anne King, and Tommy Ashurst. Green Hills Funeral Home of Troy is honored to serve the Cotton family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Central Mental Health, Troy, Alabama or St. John's Episcopal Church, Montgomery, Alabama. Condolences may be left in Judy's online guestbook at www.greenhillsfuneralhom.net.

To those who knew Judy, you'll recall how caring and loving she was to all she met. And to those of you who shared a portion of her walk with her and helped her over these many years through your visits, prayers, and the many thoughtful gestures during times of difficulty, thank you! She always appreciated your company and your friendship.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff and volunteers of Hospice Advantage of Troy for their support in her final days and to Trudy Smith, her beloved friend, caregiver, and quite possibly her angel.

Condolences to her family and friends. Our class of 66 was huge and I didn't know Judy well, but it hurts to lose a fellow classmate. Praying for her loved ones.
