Robert Crane was a dear friend to me, and to many of you. He died in a tragic automobile accident on the night of July 18, 1961, less than two months after we graduated from Lanier. I was in the car with him, and remember those events as vividly as if they happened yesterday.

I think we would honor him by getting together sometime during the weekend and telling stories about Robert that many have. I know he was a heart-throb for some of you girls, so there should be some of you who will step forward with those memories. And he was a regular guy - one that was easy for other guys to be close friends with.

Suggestions for when might be a good time for this are appreciated.

Chip

Robert and I had arranged to room together in the fall after graduation and I have always pondered why the Lord took him at such a young age. Chip, who posted, was also a close friend and I will never forget the phone call I got from my girlfriend (I was already at Auburn having gone to summer quarter right after high shool graduation) telling me two of my closest friends had been a horrible accident, that Robert was gone and Chip was badly injured. That call has stuck with me all my life.

Incredibly, I have not seen nor talked to Chip but a few times in all these years and I sometimes wonder why so many of us decided to plunge into our work at the expense of such good friends, when we had all heard the old saying that no minister had ever stood at the bedside of a dying man and heard him say "I wish I had spent more time at the office."

Chip is so right when he says we can do better and stay in touch. It is never too late to remember those you cared for and continue to remember with such fond memories. Thank you to those who have obviously spent many hours putting this web site together so we  have the opportunity to do just that.

Count me among the "heart throb" number.  We were both with "significant others" so I viewed Robert as a dear friend; but when he wrote "I love you" in my yearbook, my heart beat just a little faster.  Losing him was one of the first big losses of my young life and, in many ways, defined how I coped with loss from then on.  I love your idea, Chip, of getting together to share memories of Robert.  Count me in that number, as well.  -- mgj
