May Mathews Handey Smith, born August 2, 1939 and a lifelong resident of Montgomery, Alabama died on July 13, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. May was predeceased by her parents, Mildred Mathews Handey and Gene Nicholson Handey, and her brother Gene Nicholson Handey, Jr.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years Jack Smith; her stepchildren, John Freeman Smith, Jr. and Katharine Palmer Smith; her granddaughters, Collins Lehman and Mary London Fuller (James); her nephews, George Mathews Handey (Jeannie) and Gene Nicholson Handey, III (Terri); her sister-in-law Betty Jo Handey Richie; her great-nieces and nephews, George Mathews Handey (Courtney), Caroline Nicholson Lipinsky (Elliot), Gene Nicholson Handey, IV (Brooks), and Mason Lewis Handey; her cousins, Georgia Mathews Armstrong (Robert), Jane Mathews Penry (Walter), Dr. Frank M. Mathews, Menelle Head Weiss (John), Beth Heath Bridges (Tom), Susan Sanders Mathews, Frances Mathews Harris and George H.B. Mathews (Betty).
Visitation will be on Saturday, July 16 at 1:00 pm. at St. John's Episcopal Church of Montgomery, with services following at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
