Madolyn B. Anderson (Radney) - Class Of 1957

Madolyn Anderson Radney died peacefully surrounded by family on September 4, 2024. She was born Madolyn Boyd Anderson in Birmingham, Alabama on October 5, 1939. As a child, her family moved to Montgomery, and she graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1957. Madolyn attended Auburn University where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority and was selected as an Auburn Glomerata Beauty. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Auburn in 1962.

She met Tom Radney and they wed on September 8, 1962. As Tom found success in his legal and political careers, Madolyn was his constant and loyal advocate. She kept family and their children as her primary focus and was the steady force behind his accomplishments.

Madolyn immersed herself in the Alexander City community and served it in many ways. She was an avid reader and a champion of literacy and the joy of reading books. She was a member of the Adelia M. Russell Library board of directors for almost 40 years and a Laubach Literacy tutor to many local students. She was a member of the board of directors for the Red Cross, The First United Methodist Church Administrative Board as well as the Board of Trustees, The Alexander City Garden Club, and the Study Club. Madolyn was selected as The Outstanding Woman of Alabama for 1968. She was also a talented bridge player where she enjoyed the fellowship of her friends.

Madolyn is survived by her four children, Margaret Ellen Radney, Fran Radney Harvey, Hollis Radney Lovett (Michael,) and Thomas Anderson Radney (Catie); Eleven grandchildren, Madolyn Kirby (Cason,) Anna Lee Melnick (PJ), Elizabeth Caroline Harvey, Thomas Noah Lovett, Neil Anderson Radney, Margaret Hollis Harvey, Luke Radney Harvey, Catherine Finlay Radney, William Barrett Lovett, John Radney Lovett, and Cecilia Frances Radney; two great-grandchildren, William Monroe Kirby and Margaret Lyles Kirby; her sister, Margaret Barr Anderson Armor; a very special cousin, Mary Lee Radney; and a loving extended family.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John Tom Radney, and her parents, Madolyn Barr Daniel Anderson and James Neil Anderson.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at The Adelia M. Russell Library, 318 Church Street, Alexander City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2024, at First United Methodist Church of Alexander City, 3266 US Highway 280, Alexander City.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, gifts be made in Madolyn’s memory to the Adelia M. Russell Library, 318 Church Street, or Mamie’s Place Children’s Library, 284 Church Street, Alexander City, Alabama 35010.
