In Memory Of Our Poets

Peggy Edney (Grigg) - Class Of 1956

In the care of Allnutt Funeral Service – Drake Road Chapel

Margaret Bowen “Peggy” Grigg passed away at home in Fort Collins on Sunday, August 27, 2023. She was 85 years old. Peggy was born on July 16, 1938 in Birmingham, Alabama, to Muir Jennings “Easy” Edney and Katharine Bedford “Mama K” Edney.

The family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where Peggy spent her earliest years living near Mama K’s loving Bedford family. This move was due to Easy’s bout with alcoholism, which ended in 1942 through Alcoholics Anonymous. Easy died in 2008 and was commemorated as being one of the oldest sober alcoholics in the world, which was a source of pride and inspiration to Peggy. The Edneys moved to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1945 and Peggy began school at Capitol Heights Elementary. She attended Baldwin Junior High and Sidney Lanier High School, where she graduated in 1956 and was named “sweetest” and a class beauty in the yearbook. During her school years, Peggy had close friends, especially in her church, which was a very important part of her life. The Edney family was very close knit, and Peggy always remained especially close to her sister Dottie Branch, who passed away in 2016. Her other sibling, Tim Edney, was a superb athlete. He passed away in 2020.

Peggy received a Dupont Family Scholarship and graduated in 1960 from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia, with an English major. She then received a master’s degree in English and Teaching from Vanderbilt University in 1961 and took a job teaching English at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery. That year during the Christmas break she met Neil, they fell in love, and were married in Stuttgart, Germany, on July 14, 1962.

Peggy and Neil spent their first two years of marriage in Europe due to Neil’s military service. They traveled widely and especially enjoyed car camping in Italy, France, and Spain. Peggy taught English for foreigners at their base in Oberammergau, Germany. The love that she and Neil had for the mountains led to their move to Colorado in 1965. They raised three daughters in Colorado, except for a time between 1977-1982 when they moved the family to Raleigh, North Carolina. They then moved back to Fort Collins and have been there ever since.

As her friends and family know, Peggy’s life centered around her love for God the Father and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was filled with the Holy Spirit and loved to tell everyone about the Lord. From her earliest days, Peggy was pure and solid in her beliefs and Christian commitments. Her favorite place would be a Bible study or meeting where she could experience the infilling of the Spirit and give praise to the Lord. During the 1970s, Peggy and Neil hosted praise meetings in their home, and she always considered those as high points in her life. She and her sister Dottie also had a memorable trip to California and Hawaii to attend a Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship meeting, and Peggy traveled to her beloved Israel in 1980 with her close friend, Patricia Ruark.

Peggy was predeceased by her parents and both siblings. She is survived by her husband Neil and daughters Mary, Alice, and Margaret. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Alpha Center in Fort Collins.

Peggy’s Celebration of Life will be held at Allnutt Funeral Chapel, 650 W. Drake Road in Fort Collins, on Tuesday, September 5, starting at 11 a.m. The burial service will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, 8426 S. Hwy 287 in Fort Collins. A reception will follow.
