Charles Andrew Harris, Jr. (1918-2007) - Class Of 1936

HARRIS, Charles Andrew, a resident of Montgomery, AL died February 9, 2007 at the age of 88.  He was a graduate of Lanier High School & Auburn University and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1942 until 1946.  Charles was presi­dent of Mead & Charles, Inc., a local insurance and real estate company.  He was a founding member and served on the board of directors of SouthTrust Bank in Montgomery for over 20 years.  He was a past presi­dent of the Montgomery Asso­ciation of Fire & Casualty Insur­ance Agents and the Institute of Real Estate Management. He also served on the State In­surance Board & the Board of the Montgomery Junior Cham­ber of Commerce.  Charles served on the board of direc­tors of the Kiwanis Club and was a trustee of the Kiwanis Stu­dent Loan Fund for almost 20 years.  Charles served several terms on the vestry and as Sen­ior Warden of St. John's Episco­pal Church.  He was president of The Society of Pioneers of Montgomery and was a mem­ber of the Montgomery County Historical Society.  Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Jane An­drews Dozier Harris.  He is sur­vived by his daughter, Julia Harris Nelson; son-in-law, Thom­as Merrell Nelson of Greensbo­ro, NC; sons, Charles Andrew Harris, III; daughter-in-law, Su­san McKinney Harris of Mont­gomery, AL, William Marks Harris and daughter-in-law, Katharine Fischer Harris of Montgomery, AL; grandchil­dren, Jane Andrews Nelson,Thomas Edgar Nelson, III, Mary Frances Harris, Lucille Jackson Harris, Katharine Walraven Harris, & Charles Andrew Harris, II.  Funeral services will be held Monday, February 12, 2007 from St. John's Episcopal Church at 11:00 AM with Reve­rend Robert C. Wisnewski and Reverend David H. Peeples offi­ciating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers will be JamesTurner Inscoe, John Stuart Yow, III, LeRoy McEntire, III, Geoffrey Mark Stough, Robert Houston Young, Jr., and William Mathe­ws Marks, IV.  Honorary pall­bearers will be Dr. Roland Ar­thur Hester, III, William Alfred Hughes, and Weldon William­son Doe, Jr.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church,113 Madison Ave., Montgom­ery, AL 36104.  LEAK MEMORY CHAPEL DIRECTING.
