GAINES, Bette Susan Thomp­son, September 30, 1933 - March 11, 2008: Beloved wife of Leslie H. Gaines, Jr. and mother of Denise Suzanne Westbrook (William Petrout­son) and Rebecca Lynn West­brook (Charles T. Gaetz), passed away at home on Tuesday, March 11, 2008.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Leak-Memory Cha­pel with Pastor Steve MacInnis officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.  Visita­tion will be on Thursday, March 13, 2008 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Leak-Memory Cha­pel.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse M. Thompson, Sr. and May­belle Boothe Thompson, and her brother, Charles E. Thompson, Sr. She is survived by her brothers, Jesse Marvin Thompson, Jr. (Naomi), John Berl Thompson, Sr. (Joanne), Rowland Frederick Thomp­son, many beloved niece sand nephews and other fami­ly members.  Bette graduated from Sidney Lanier HS in 1951.  She worked in administrative support positions for the US Postal Inspection Service from 1959 - 2002 in Wichita, KS, Memphis, TN, Charlotte, NC and Montgomery, AL. She en­joyed people and having fun through many activities and hobbies.  She was involved over the last 18 years with the Montgomery Newcomer's Club, the Embroiderer's Guild, the Philatelic Society, the Ge­nealogical Society, and had earned a Master Gardner Certificate.  She was also a charter representative for Southern Living at Home. Mrs.Gaines was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.  The family would like to express gratitude to the Montgomery Cancer Center physicians, staff, and espe­cially the volunteers for their loving care and support dur­ing her illness. Heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Montgomery for providing comfort, dignity, and support in recent days.
