John Christopher Mathews, Jr. D.M.D., a lifelong resident of Montgomery passed away Friday September 28, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. John C. Mathews. He is survived by his wife Susan, and their three sons: John (Beth), Sanders, and Jackson; and granddaughter, Page; and his sister, Frances Mathews Harris, Tuscaloosa. John attended the University of Alabama and graduated from Huntingdon College. He then pursued a degree in oral surgery from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and his internship and residency at Vanderbilt University in oral surgery. He practiced in Montgomery for 35 years. He enjoyed flying and was trained as a combat fighter jet pilot in the Air National Guard. Flying was one of his greatest pleasures. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Cornerstone Sunday School Class, Kiwanis Club, Dadaelions and the Second District Dental Society. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with private burial at Greenwood Cemetery.
