James Burns Johns - Class Of 1955


Burns Johns, 76, went home to be with the Lord on March 25, 2014, after battling brain cancer.

He is preceded in death by his father, Roy E. Johns, his mother, Eloise Burns Johns, and his brother Roy E. Johns Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Angela Dianne Johns; his sister, Eloise Johns Bennett (Davis); children, Keith Burns Johns (Beth), Susan Stafford Johns, and Walter Coffin Johns (Michelle); grandson, Eric Burns Johns; niece, Carolyn Bennett Vizzina (Chris); nephew, Davis Bennett III (Jennifer); and three great nephews. He also leaves behind countless friends and colleagues.

Burns was born in Montgomery AL, where he attended Sidney Lanier High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama (1959), where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He served our country in the Army and Army Reserves from 1959-1969. In business, he was President of Birmingham Publishing Company and J Burns Johns & Co, and founder of Intercash, LLC. He served on the vestry at All Saints Episcopal Church until 1977 and was a member of Cathedral Church of the Advent for 36 years.

Burns will be remembered fondly for his wonderful wit, wisdom, and "Burns' opinions", his laughter, intelligence, and memory. He knew no strangers. He had a love for the Lord, which he shared with people around the world.

Burns' family is thankful for Clergy and friends at the Advent for their prayers and support. We also thank Advent House intercessors and many friends and caregivers.

A service of Holy Communion will be held at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham on Monday 3/31 at 3pm, with public visitation beginning at 2. A private interment will follow the service in the garden.
