Carolyn Jean Blake (McCormack) (1937-2011) - Class Of 1955

Carolyn Jean Blake McCormack passed away April 4, 2011, at the Baptist South Hospital with her family by her side. She was a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, and 74 years old. She was born January 7, 1937 in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late Madison Moss Blake Sr. and the late Gladys M. Patterson Blake.

As a child the late music legend Hank Williams, Sr. was occasionally her babysitter. After graduating Sidney Lanier High School in 1955, she briefly worked as a model and on a local TV show. She also rode the same bus with Rosa Parks, in which her picture was taken by a United Press photographer. The photo is now a part of history. At a local college Ms. McCormack majored in English and Journalism.

While working at Maxwell Air Force Base, she met the late Colonel Lemuel "Lee" Huston McCormack Jr. The couple married in Virginia on September 22, 1958. They traveled extensively throughout Europe, living in France and Germany, where she served as a committee member for the Officers' Wives Club. She was a member of the Air Force Civil Air Patrol, while Lee was Deputy Commander.

After returning to the States, she lived a short time in Houston, Texas, before returning to her home town of Montgomery, Alabama, and residing on Maxwell AFB. She was hostess of many parties in their home, where the guests included the Governor and other dignitaries. In 1972, she divorced and moved with her children off base.

Mrs. McCormack returned as a Federal Employee at Maxwell AFB with the Air Force Chaplin's Resource Board and worked for the Air University Press as a Technical Editor. She assisted in publishing many of the War College manuals. She retired in 2006 after 33 years of editorial work. She was an avid reader who enjoyed history, gourmet cooking, belly dancing, and giving all to raising her children. Carolyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend who will be dearly missed.
