William "Bill" Holcombe Crawford Thomas (1940-2010) - Class Of 1958

THOMAS, William Holcombe Crawford (Bill), passed away on January 18, 2010.  Funeral services will be held at Leak Memory Chapel, at 1:00 pm, Thursday, January 21 with Rev. Walter Albritton officiat­ing.  A visitation at the funeral home will be one hour prior to the service.  Bill Thomas was predeceased by his parents, William C. Thomas and Grace Williams Thomas. Bill is sur­vived by his two brothers, Henry Randall Thomas and George Williams Thomas; his three nephews Randall Thom­as, Jr., Clark Thomas, and Render Thomas; and his niece, Virginia Thomas.  Bill was a lifelong member of St. James Methodist Church.  As a youth, Bill joined the newly founded St. James Methodist Church.  After his retirement, Bill moved back to Montgom­ery in approximately 1995 to take care of his mother and taught in the E. B. Paul Men's Sunday School Class until he became unable to continue.  Bill graduated from at Sidney Lanier High School and the University of Alabama where he received both a bachelor degree (BA) and a masters degree (MA).  While in col­lege, Bill joined Theta Chi Fra­ternity.  Bill served as president of the Alpha Phi Chapter.  Bill remained active as a volun­teer worker in the fraternity until his death. He served in several positions for Theta Chi including service as the Al­pha Phi Chapter alumni advi­ser and service as a Regional Counselor for many years.  According to the national of­fice of Theta Chi, Bill Thomas received every service award that Theta Chi gives out.  Bill was affectionately known by his friends and fraternity brothers throughout the state and country as "Brother Bill."  Bill was a dedicated public school teacher in  Birming­ham for more than 25 years, serving most of those years teaching History at Parker  High School.  Bill actively sup­ported the University of Ala­bama, Alabama football, Theta Chi Fraternity and St. James UMC.  Pallbearers for the funeral are Randall Rhodes, Spears Rhodes, Paul Jacobs, Craig Cornwell, John Adkison, Lloyd Smile, and Philip Young.  Honorary pall­bearers are the members of the E. B. Paul Men's Sunday School Class and Theta Chi Fraternity.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to either Theta Chi or St. James UMC.  Leak-Memory Chapel Directing.  www.leak-mc.com
