Alexander Andrews Marks (1910-2009) - Class Of 1926

MARKS, Alexander An­drews, 99, a lifelong resi­dent of Montgomery, Ala­bama, and son of William Mathews Marks and Jane An­drews Marks, died at Cara Vita Village on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wives Frances McMillan Marks and Jean Elder Mitchell Marks. Survivors include daughters Frances Marks Bruton (John) of Mexi­co City, Mexico, and Julia Marks Young of Jackson, Miss.; grandchildren Alexan­der Andrews Grant Bruton of Houston, Tex., Edmund Ma­caulay Bruton II of New Or­leans, La., Frances Brinley Bru­ton of London, U.K., Katherine Andrews Young of Brooklyn,NY, Nicholas Benton Young of Taipei, Taiwan; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews: Richard T. Doz­ier, William Mathews Marks III (Carma), Ralph Stanley Marks (Sandy), Elisabeth Marks Green (James) and Jane Andrews Marks. He will also be missed by Betty Par­ker, Angela Robinson, Cas­sandra Henderson, Narissa Hodge and Rosa Sanders, caregivers from Divinity Homecare. Marks represented Alabama at the 1924 Boy Scout Jambo­ree in Denmark and gradu­ated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1926, Mercersburg Academy in 1928, Princeton University in 1932 and Har­vard Law School in 1935. He began practicing law in 1935.  During WWII he served in the Army Air Corps. He was elect­ed Judge of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas in 1948, serving until his retirement in 1976.  He was known for his fair treatment of those who appeared in court and support of young law­yers. He is remembered for his love of people, curiosity, keen intellect and long-stan­ding interest in geography, politics and history. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, serving as senior warden 1948; and a member of the Montgomery Country Club, Princeton Alumni Association, Alabama Bar Association, Montgomery Society of Pio­neers and Alabama Historical Association. Funeral Services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Saturday, June 13, at 3:00 p.m., with visitation at 2:00 p.m. in the parish hall. Burial will be in Oakwood Ceme­tery. In lieu of flowers contri­butions may be made to St.John's or to a charity of the donor's choice. Pallbearers will be great-nieces and great-nephews William Mathews Marks IV, Richard Hughes Marks, Ralph Stanley Marks, Jr., Anne Marks Warm­ington, Patricia Dozier Palmer and William Marks Harris.
