Katherine Trawick Thames, age 90, a lifelong resident of Montgomery, Alabama and more recently Birmingham, Alabama, died peacefully in her sleep early Friday morning after a period of declining health. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allyn Mabson Thames Sr., her parents, Zachary Taylor Trawick Sr. and Catherine Marks Trawick, and her brother Zachary Taylor Trawick Jr. (Pat). A woman of deep faith, she looked forward to joining the many friends, family members, and especially her loving husband Allyn in heaven. Mrs. Thames was a descendant of President John Tyler and John Baytop Scott, one of the founders of Montgomery.
She is survived by her son, Hugh Browning Thornton Jr (Cecelia) of Birmingham, Alabama and her daughter Katherine Thornton Weller (Dennis) of Raleigh, North Carolina, stepson Allyn Mabson Thames Jr. (Katie), Opelika, Alabama and stepdaughter Gray Thames Thuston (Lee) of Birmingham, Alabama; beloved grandchildren Tere Thornton Badham (Walker), Hugh Browning Thornton III (Hannah) of Birmingham, Alabama; Samantha Katherine Beachum, Hunter Scott Beachum and Henry Browning Beachum, Charlotte, North Carolina; Allyn Mabson Thames III (Ashley) of Auburn, Alabama, Christopher Rutland Thames ( Adrienne), Thames Thuston Schoenvogel (Robert) and William Lee Thuston Jr. (Ginger), all of Birmingham, Alabama, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She attended Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery and Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She called herself a “flower child” and loved being on the Flower Committee there. She was able to help with many lovely arrangements for the altar. For years she was an active member of the Junior League of Montgomery, the Colonial Dames, Sojourners, and Tintagel. All her life she enjoyed playing bridge and was part of a foursome of several ladies’ groups. She started and made a great success of her own business, Career Personnel before female-owned businesses were commonplace. She and Allyn ran this employment agency together for many years.
Mrs. Thames loved her large family and her many friends in Montgomery and elsewhere. She was especially fond of the wonderful, loving group of close friends she had in the Rosemont Gardens area where she lived for many years.
A brief service at the gravesite will take place on Sunday, 29 September 2024 at 2:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery, Pike Road, Alabama. The family asks that in place of flowers, one might make a contribution in her memory to their favorite charity.
