Eugene Chapman 'Bit' Sherlock, M.D. was born in Troy, Alabama to Christopher Joseph and Leonora Chapman Sherlock. He grew up in Montgomery and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School. He attended L'Universite de Paris a la Sorbonne and graduated from the University of Alabama and the Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham.
Dr. Sherlock completed a Medical internship and a General Surgery Residency under Dr. Champ Lyons at the University of Alabama Medical Center (UAB) and completed his training in Plastic Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He was an Associate Professor and Clinical Professor of Surgery at UAB Medical Center for many years where he also served as Co-Chief, Section of Oncology, Plastic and General Surgery and Chief of Surgical Service at the VA Hospital. He left UAB and joined the staff at Brookwood Medical Center where he practiced until his retirement.
While at Brookwood, Dr. Sherlock was Chief of Plastic Surgery, Chief of Outpatient Surgery and Chief of Surgery. He was a Fellow in the America College of Surgeons, a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the Birmingham Surgical Society and the Birmingham Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Sherlock served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy Medical Corps and served as ship's surgeon aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. was a member of the Country Club of Birmingham, Leadership Birmingham and the Beaux Arts Krewe. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Rollers, Gravy Train and Chiselers dogfights where he spent many happy hours.
Dr. Sherlock is survived by his wife Jean Shinners Sherlock and five daughters: Marguerite (Bitsy) Sherlock: Frances (Sissy) Bice, Richmond, Virginia; Katherine (Katie) Thagard (Mrs. Thomas W.); Elizabeth Begley, Longmont, Colorado; and Anne Zeron (Mrs. Bryan), Dothan, Alabama. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
A visitation for Dr. Sherlock will be Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018 from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood, Alabama. A Memorial Mass for Dr. Sherlock will be Monday, January 8, 2018, at Saint Frances Xavier Church at 12:00 PM. followed by a time of visitation at the church.
