Robert Byrd Mitchell. 86, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on March 14, 2018. He was born March 1, 1932, in Elba, Alabama to Vera and Byrd Mitchell. He was preceded in death by son, Robert Marc Mitchell (1958-1959).
Dr. Mitchell married Lavinia Brown on June 3, 1956, and she survives. He is also survived by two children Michael (Patsy) Mitchell and Gay (Brad) Richardson both of Little Rock; nine grandchildren, Joshua (Audrey), Maggie (Ben), Claire (Chad), Laura (Matt), Sara, Tye, Joseph, and Summer; two great-grandsons, Henry and Barrett, and a host of others whom he loved dearly.
After receiving his early education in Montgomery, Alabama at Sidney Lanier High School and Huntingdon College, he received his medical degree in 1958 from the Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Mitchell served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1961. His orthopedic residency was done in Oklahoma City from 1961-1965.
In 1965 he moved to Huntsville, Alabama with his family to begin his medical practice. Aside from his many medical achievements, he enjoyed the Rotary Club, the Quarterback Club, the Huntsville Symphony, and especially work with Huntsville Rehab. He was a faithful member of Trinity Methodist Church for years and the First Presbyterian Church until 2006. After retiring in 2006, he and his wife moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he was able to enjoy many years with his family.
A celebration of his life will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, One Covenant Drive, Little Rock at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, tributes may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, Arkansas Hospice or the charity of one's choice.
