Benjamin "Ben" Franklin Ellis, Jr. (1928-2011) - Class Of 1947

Benjamin Franklin Ellis, Jr., 83, went home to be with the Lord September 2, 2011 after a long and courageous fight with cancer. He was born July 25, 1928 and a life long resident of Montgomery. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Ellis, Sr. and his mother, Ruby Barton Ellis. Ben leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of fifty seven years, Glynn Gibson Ellis, a son, David Ellis (Lisa) of Chagrin Falls, OH, a daughter, Julie Ellis Hall (Guy) of Montgomery, six grandchildren, Benjamin III, Katelynn, Harrison and Anderson Ellis, Kim and Lela Hall and a great grandson, Elijah James Ellis. He is survived by his brother George (Judy) Ellis of Montgomery and sister Helen (Bill) Morrison of Daphne. Ben was a very compassionate and caring man known for his sense of humor and love of people. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a former member of Cloverdale Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and volunteer with Hospice and Meals on Wheels. Ben graduated from Lanier High School in 1947 and was a Korean War Veteran serving four years in the Navy. After returning home from military service, he joined his father in business and was the owner of Ben Ellis Supply Company and Montgomery Bumper Service. He enjoyed nineteen years of retirement traveling with his wife and being with family and friends. Pallbearers are Benjamin Ellis, Harrison Ellis, Anderson Ellis, Roger Gillespie, John Morrison, Wallace Smith and Cecil Shofner. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Golling, Buster Rambo, Sam Till and John King. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 5th at 11:00 am at Leak Memory Chapel with Rev. Jay Wolf officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, September 4th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Leak Memory Chapel. The family would like to say thank you to Dr. Keith Thompson, Cathy and all of the wonderful nurses at the Montgomery Cancer Center.
