Jewell McLain Weldon, affectionately known as “Mama Jewell,” joyfully embraced Jesus on January 21, 2025, while at Orchard View Rehab and Skilled Nursing in Columbus, Georgia.
Jewell's life will be honored on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Dalraida Methodist Church, 3817 Atlanta Hwy, Montgomery, Alabama, with visitation beginning at 1:00 and services following at 2:00. Family Graveside will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Officiating will be Reverend Mac Fulcher, son-in-law, Dr. Rocky Wright, grandson and Reverend Mike Cobb.
Jewell was the 7th of 8 children and was born January 27, 1928 in Montgomery, Alabama. Jewell grew up in Capitol Heights and, after graduating from Sidney Lanier, attended Huntington Girls' College. Jewell was married to her “one and only real true love”, William “Bill” Hunter Weldon for 67 1/2 years and was preceded in death by Bill, her husband, their son, Michael (Mike) Alan Weldon, her parents, Daniel Mathison and Wrennie Peak McLain, and her siblings, Nannie Laura Burge, Jeremiah Patrick (Mack) McLain, Irene Johnson, Thomas N. McLain, Daniel M. McLain, Jr., Huey C. McLain and June Marie Carlisle.
In all her almost 97 years of life, Jewell never met a stranger. And because of her desire to serve in her love for Christ, she became a mother for many struggling young people who attended the Open Door Club, NAMI. She was able to enlist her church to help give them a weekly place to socialize. She became involved with Friends of Griel Memorial Hospital where she created support groups. From here, she became a strong advocate for NAMI and represented the State of Alabama by going to Washington D.C. on more than one occasion. She later volunteered for Sacred Heart Hospital in Port St. Joe, FL, and also volunteered for Reading Buddies through her church to read with children.
Jewell began professionally sewing for Montgomery Fair alterations, which led to monograming using a free-hand machine. With a plentiful personal business, many were the recipients of her talents. Jewell shared many other talents as singing in the church choir, painting watercolors of her church’s historical progress, designing and creating altar cloths for her church and coordinated making choir robes for the children’s choir which she directed.
While living at Wesley Gardens, after the residents retired for the evening, Jewell would sneak away to design the marquee for the following day, giving the daily schedule and encouragement. Later, she moved to Orchard View in Columbus, GA, where she brought much love and joy to the residents, CNAs and nursing staff, (where they also “doted” on her).
Jewell is survived by her twin daughters, Beckie Fulcher (Mac) of Chipley, Florida, and Bobbie Canada (Arnie) of Alabama, seven, grandchildren, Rachael Bedell (David), Dr. Rocky Wright (Charlene), Mac Fulcher, III (Nûre), Micah Fulcher (Jessica), Robin Pokswinski (Scott), JT Sims, Jr., Rebecca (Becky) Styll, 20 great-grandchildren and dozens of nieces and nephews.
