Thomas Fredrick Furlong (1927-2011) - Class Of 1945

FURLONG, Thomas Fredrick, 84, of 107 Wineberry Way, died Monday, July 11, 2011. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, he was a son of the late Collier and Estelle Gregory Furlong. Tom entered the U.S. Navy near the end of World War II, serving for 15 months. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University, taught engineering courses briefly at Auburn, and entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received the Masters of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. While enrolled at M.I.T. in Cambridge, MA, he studied Theology at nearby Harvard Divinity School and taught at Harvard. He was retired from Monsanto with over 35 years service. He is survived by his wife, Anne S. Furlong, of the home, sons, Daniel M. Furlong of Atlanta, GA, and Clark W. Furlong of Niceville, FL; daughters, Emily Gillis of Montgomery, AL and Amy Stamatis of Searcy, AR; three stepsons, James R. Lane of Columbia, Stuart P. Lane and Stephen F. Lane of Greenville, SC; his sister, Merle Haynes of Montgomery, AL and 14 grandchildren. A memorial service will be Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 2:00pm at The Mackey Mortuary. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.
