Lillie Mae Hall Miller, (Granny), Mrs. William Eugene Miller, died May 10, 2003.
A native Montgomerian and the baby daughter of Lillie Bell Hall and Hardy Benjamin Hall, Lillie Mae Miller graduated from Montgomery public schools. On December 1, 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, William (Bill) Eugene Miller.
Together they raised three children; Bonnie M. Shanks (Tommy), a teacher at Jefferson Davis High School; Dr. Kitty C. Collier (Dale), retired from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education; and William (Bill) Hardy Miller (Harriet), a local contractor and owner of MillCo. Lillie served in many capacities and on all levels of the Order of the Eastern Star and was the Worthy Grand Matron of the Alabama Order of the Eastern Star 1982-83. She was an OES General Grand Chapter Committee member from 1992-1995.
Throughout the years, Sister Lil and Brother Bill traveled widely and made countless friends through OES. Lillie also served in many capacities with the United Daughters of the Confederacy as a member of the Cradle of the Confederacy Chapter #94. Proud of her Confederate ancestor through whom she joined, Benjamin Jefferson Sansom, a member of Clanton's Volunteer Artillery, CSA, in February of 1863. Lillie worked diligently through the UDC to preserve Confederate records and archives, to mark the graves of the Confederate dead, and to recognize veterans of all wars.
Lillie left the Federal Civil Service in 1998 after twenty-eight years, retiring as Chief Operator of Administrative Switchboard. She began her career as a telephone switchboard operator with Southern Bell Telephone Company.
After her retirement, Lillie volunteered as a tour guide at the Alabama State Capitol and Old Alabama Town served as a Sunday School teacher at Capitol Heights United Methodist Church, and continued her OES and UDC service.
She leaves nine grandchildren; Kelley Miller, Clay Miller (Tonya), Andy Miller (Emily), Justin Shanks (Rhonda), Jason Shanks (Christi), Tiffani Shanks Hudgins (Jay), Teresa Shanks Segrest (Michael), Tom Shanks, and Lindsey Collier.
She leaves ten great-grandchildren; Stone, Taylor, and Zachary Miller; Chandler Shanks; Craig, Emily, and Ashleigh Shanks; Hannah and Jamie Segrest; and Jonathan Hudgins.
On April 8, 2001, her much-loved Bill died after a long and courageous fight with multiple illnesses. A beloved wife of forty-six and one-half years, she was a caring mother, a nourishing grandmother, and a mentoring and fun-loving great-grandmother.
After her courageous fight with colon cancer, she left this world for a glorious homecoming with Sweet William and all of their friends and family who had gone before.
Lillie is survived by one sister, Mrs. Marie Hall Pepper (L. T.) of Titus, Alabama. Pallbearers are Clay Miller, Andy Miller, Justin Shanks, Jason Shanks, Jay Hudgins, and Pee Wee Burden.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Richard Harris, Dr. Keith Thompson, Dr. David Knapp, Mrs. Christy Newmeyer of the Montgomery Cancer Center, and the Angels of the Amedisys Home Health Care.
Donations may be made to the Handicapped Access Fund at Capitol Heights UMC, the William E. Miller and Lillie Mae Miller UDC Scholarship Fund designated for Troy State University, the ESTARL scholarship fund of OES, or a favorite charity.
