Malcolm Terry McPherson, Jr., died on February 21, 2018, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Terry was born in Montgomery, Alabama, on January 24, 1944, and grew up in Snowdoun near Montgomery. He graduated in 1962 from Sidney Lanier High School, where he was senior class president. He earned a BS and MS in electrical engineering from Auburn University and was named Outstanding Engineering Graduate. He did post-graduate work in statistical communications at UNC-Chapel Hill. He began his career with Bell Laboratories in Greensboro, NC, moved with his department to Whippany, NJ, and finished his career with Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies at Murray Hill, NJ.
After retiring, he moved with his wife to Hilton Head Island, SC, in 2002. He enjoyed traveling; SCUBA diving, which included the Blue Hole of Belize and shark tank at the Georgia Aquarium; boating on Lowcountry waterways; gourmet cooking; furniture making; and singing with the Barbershop Harmony Society, where he served a year as chapter president.
Terry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sansing Smith McPherson; his daughter, Cindy McPherson Frantz of Oberlin, OH; his son Duncan McPherson of Asheville, NC; and his two grandsons, Dalin Frantz and Noah Frantz, both of Oberlin, OH.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 14, at Spring Lake Pavilion, Hilton Head Plantation at 4:00 pm.
