Richard "Dick" Wesley Compton (1925-2008) - Class Of 1943

COMPTON, Richard Wesley, a lifelong resident of Montgomery, passed away on February 22, 2008. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Pegge Seay Compton, parents Robert Emmett Compton and Eloise Parsons Compton, and a brother, Robert Emmett Compton, Jr., who died in World War II. Survivors include a brother, Jerry Dale Compton, three daughters, Dale Compton Faber (Dan), Ann Compton Harrell (John) and Eloise Compton Wilkerson (Mark), grandchildren Kristen Faber, Carol Ann Faber, Eloise Faber, Maggie Harrell, Wesley Harrell, Ruthie Wilkerson and Anne Miles Wilkerson. Richard Compton graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and entered the Army Air Corps in 1943, ultimately retiring as a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserve in 1972. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction from Auburn University in 1948 and returned to Montgomery to work in the construction industry. He owned and operated a general contracting business in Montgomery from 1964 to 1982, when he was asked to accept a position with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, first serving as area manager for HUD's Alabama office and later as Deputy Regional Administrator. In 1994, he returned to Montgomery to serve in the Administration of Governor Fob James as Executive Assistant for Economic Development and later, as Manager of the Alabama Development Office Trade Division. He was involved in the Montgomery Jaycees and the Capital City Kiwanis Club,and also served as chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Party for over twenty years. He was also an auxiliary member of The Sewing Club. Mr. Compton was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon emeritus and a member of the Robert Strong Bible Class.  Funeral services will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, February 25, 2008, with visitation beginning at noon. Burial will be held immediately after the service at Greenwood/Serenity Gardens. Pallbearers will be William Carroll, Robert Compton, Rick Hansen, Wesley Harrell, Edward Hunter, Renis O. Jones, III, Noble Seay Jones, Noble Seay Jones, Jr., George Miles Jones and Ralph Moore. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jerry Dale Compton, Renis O. Jones, Jr., Perry O. Hooper,Jr., Hal Dodson, Douglas Harper, James W. Worthington and the members of the Robert Strong Bible Class at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to Faith Promise at Trinity Presbyterian Church for Missions and the Seay Twins Art Gallery at Huntingdon College. Southern Memorial Directing
