NAFTEL, James Philip, 82, died June 22, 2007, in Hoover, Alabama. Born August 9, 1924, in Lapine, Alabama, he spent his childhood in several locations including Lapine, Naftel, and Montgomery, Alabama. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery and attended the University of Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was deployed in England and France. After returning from the war, he married Nathalie Joyce Johnson of De Pere, Wisconsin, and settled in Alabama where they reared six children. He worked for the Federal Housing Administration and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was a long time member of First Lutheran Church in Birmingham. After retiring, he and Nathalie moved to Snead and he was instrumental in designing and building the current home for the Christ Lutheran Church in Albertville. Several years ago he and Nathalie moved to Vestavia and joined the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Riverchase. Survivors include his wife of 61years, Nathalie Joyce Johnson Naftel of Hoover; son John Philip (Mary Etta) Naftel of Raymond, Mississippi; daughter Linda Marie (Richard) McLeod of Roswell, Georgia; son David Carter (Bromleigh) Naftel of Vestavia; son Charles Scott (Scarlett) Naftel of Hoover; daughter Deborah Susan Naftel of Roswell, Georgia; son Joseph Christopher (Patricia) Naftel of Palmdale, California; and ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Survivors also include his brothers Hugh (Francis) Naftel, St. John Naftel, and Joseph Naftel all of Montgomery. A memorial service celebrating Phil Naftel's life will beheld at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Riverchase at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Aldridge Gardens, 3530 Lorna Road, Hoover, AL 35216, or to Christ Lutheran Church, 9363US Hwy 431, Albertville, AL35950, or to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 611 Riverchase Parkway West, Birmingham, AL 35244.
