Clifford Land Singleton (1923-2007) - Class Of 1941

SINGLETON, Clifford Land, 84 years old, died Feb. 1, 2007 at the V.A. Nursing Home in Tuskegee, where he had been a patient since surgery for a broken hip in December. He lived in Montgomery all his life, graduated from Lanier High School, entered the University of Alabama for a short time, before joining the Navy and serving several years during World War II. After his military service he returned to the University of Alabama and earned a degree in Journalism. He then worked as a Reporter in Lexington, KY, but in his late twenties suffered a severe stroke that left him with a paralysis in his leg and neck. Mr. Singleton was cared for by an aunt and uncle, Nell and Frank Johnson, who had also raised him from early childhood. After the Johnsons died, he lived independently in the Cloverdale-Huntingdon neighborhood, becoming a frequent and friendly figure walking to and from the grocery store, post office, pharmacy, restaurant, book store, etc. He was an avid reader and student of various languages and an accomplished pianist, even continuing in his older years to play for his own and other's enjoyment. As his health deteriorated, he has been assisted for many years by his cousin Bill Pearson and wife Gwen. Other survivors include a half sister, Jacqueline Skinner; cousins John and Judy Singleton, James and Margaret Vick; and other cousins in Alabama. In recent years he has been a resident of Arrowhead Manor Assisted Living Facility. A recent fall sent him to the V.A. Hospital in Birmingham and then to a V.A. Nursing Home in Tuskegee for his last days. Cliff Singleton has been a member of First Baptist Church since a child. Funeral services will be held from White Chapel Greenwood Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, with Rev. Kenneth Hoomes officiating and visitation one hour prior to the service. Cliff has constantly expressed his appreciation of the many caretakers and friends he has known through the years. You have helped a man with many handicaps live and die happily. God bless you and Cliff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Caring Center, First Baptist Church, 305 South Perry Street,Montgomery, AL 36104.
