BRAINARD, Edna Downing, 87, passed away on June 24,2008 in Birmingham, AL. Born in Montgomery, AL, where she lived for 83 years. She was a member of Capitol Heights Baptist Church and secretary of Dalraida Elem.School for many years. After retiring she became an avid gardener often receiving yard of the month.  Edna is survived by Mark D.Brainard, husband; Robin Brainard (Richard) Ward, daughter and son-in-law;  Mark D. Brainard, Jr., son, all of Birmingham, AL; and spe­cial niece, Leigh Shivers Weis­kittel of Atlanta, GA. Edna was preceded in death by her sis­ter, Elizabeth Shivers and her beloved granddaughter, Meredith Ashley Ward.The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the exceptionally compassionate care given by the nurses and staff of Odyssey Healthcare.The family is also very grateful to some very special RA's at Galleria Oaks for their atten­tive and loving care of Edna.The family will be receiving friends on Monday, June 30, 2008 from 1:00 to 2:00, fol­lowed by a memorial service at 2:00, at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Pelham, AL. Edna loved flowers but would also appreciate donations made to her granddaughter's memorial scholarship fund at the University of Alabama Dance Dept. or to the Hu­mane Society, ASPCA or any association helping cats and dogs.
