Joseph Werfel (1920-2011) - Class Of 1937

WERFEL, Joseph, a life-long resident of Montgomery, AL, passed away on May 22, 2011 at the age of 91.  Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 24th at 9:30 am at Greenwood Cemetery.  He was born March 13, 1920, and only left Montgomery to serve in the European theater during the Second World War.  He was a highly decorated veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie and Jacob Werfel, who owned a fruit and vegetable stand in downtown Montgomery; his brothers, Sydney and Isidore; and his wife Melba who was stricken in the polio epidemic in Montgomery in 1953.  He is survived by his daughter, Debbie, whom he faithfully raised alone, his son-in-law Charlie, his grandchildren: Joshua and Melissa, his daughter-in-law, Natsuko, his nephew Gerald, his niece JoAnn, and his cherished friend Mary Mayberry. He will live in our hearts and memories as a beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to all who knew and loved him.  Mr. Werfel's family would also like to offer their deepest gratitude to his caregivers, Geraldine and Willie Thompson, for their devotion to him.
