Evelyn Locke Sledge Britton, 101, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, May 12th, 2016.
She was born in Montgomery on January 16th, 1915, the daughter of the late Evelyn Parker Bailey and Walter Kells Sledge. Mrs. Britton was a fifth generation Montgomerian, having descended from the early settlers, Chappel Sledge and Rev. Bernard Young, on her Paternal side. Her Mother was a native of Eufaula.
Mrs. Britton was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Fleming Britton, whom she married in 1937 in Montgomery. She was also preceded in death by her brother, George F. (Bubber) Bailey.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Barbara Sledge Britton of Montgomery and Evelyn Britton Stutts (Eugene) of Birmingham. She is also survived by her sisters, Frances Sledge Nicrosi of Montgomery and Betty Bailey Shirley of Tuscaloosa.
Mrs. Britton is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Barbara Dillon Loflin (John) of Huntsville, John Britton Stutts (Tanya) of Birmingham, and Eugene Phillips Stutts (Annie) of Watercolor, Fl., and her great-grandchildren, Anne Dillon Loflin and Lucy Locke Loflin of Huntsville and John Britton Stutts Jr. and Evelyn Frances Stutts of Birmingham, and Parker Fleming Stutts of Watercolor, Fl. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
After her husband's death, Mrs. Britton served for 25 years as Chairman of the Board of Interstate Oil Co., Inc. (Chevron), a Company founded by her father-in-law, Mr. William B. Britton Sr., in 1921. The company was operated by the Britton family for over 90 years until it was sold in 2011. It was one of the oldest continually run companies in Montgomery.
Mrs. Britton was a life-long member of First Baptist Church where, as a young lady, she taught pre-school Sunday School class for a number of years. She also was a Sustainer Emeritus member of the Montgomery Junior League and a member of Montgomery Country Club for over 75 years.
She loved her garden and her home life and spending time with family and taking walks with friends. She loved Alabama Football games and summers at Highlands Country Club with her family. She was a true pleasure to be around and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Her positive outlook on life was an inspiration to all.
The family wishes to thank her kind and dedicated caregivers, Ellen Poole, Rachael Webster, Viola Burt, Addie Reese, Neisha Webster and Hazel Allen, as well as Dr. Mary Luz Fruentes, M.D., and the Rev. Dr. Jay Wolf, the In- Home Ministry of First Baptist Church, Dr. Donald Marshall, M.D. and the staff at John Knox Manor.
Funeral services will be held at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, on Monday, May 16th, 2016 at 11am, with Rev. Dr. Jay Wolf officiating. Visitation will take place one hour preceding the service. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Eugene P. Stutts, John Britton Stutts, John Britton Stutts Jr., Eugene Phillips Stutts Ill, John P. Loflin, George Forrest Bailey Jr., Harold Mclemore and J. Houston Gibbons. Remembrance may be made to First Baptist Church (In-Home Ministry) 305 South Perry Street, Montgomery, AL, 36104 or to a charity of one's choice .
