Johnny was the son of Philip Jacob Roth and Eula Mae Brackin Roth. He was educated in the public schools in Montgomery, and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1932. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology for a short time, but had to return home upon the death of his father. He became employed as a salesman at Loeb Hardware Company, and later with Sears, Roebuck, and Company. When World War II began, Johnny attended Officers' Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served in the Army Air Corps, having reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and was honorably discharged. He was recalled, however. at the outbreak of the Korean War, during which time he was stationed in Japan. He retired from the Service in 1955, due to a service-related illness. He never recovered from this illness, and he died eight years later,
Johnny married first Alva H. Stephens (Lanier Class of 1937), daughter of Frank P. Stephens and Theodora Bennett Stephens.
By Alva he had two children:
Theodora "Teddie" Kay Roth (Miller) (Jones) (Lanier class of 1962)
John Phillip Roth (Lanier Class of 1964)
Alva died in 1950.
Johnny married second Sarah Baldwin Bethea (Lanier Class of 1936) on January 2, 1952, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Montgomery, AL.
