Eugene was the son of Claude Ledyard Ray and Elizabeth Durr Fitzpatrick Ray and the brother of Alva Fitzpatrick Ray (Lanier Class of 1933), Mary Elizabeth "Sis" Ray (Spottswood) (Lanier Class of 1934), Claudia Ray (Timberlake) (Lanier Class of 1938), and Clara Frances Ray (Boyle) (Lanier Class of 1946). He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, AL, in 1930.
He married Anne Pratt, and they had three children:
