William Roscoe Johnson III of Gadsden died October 13, 2025, at the age of 83. His daughter, Ashley Johnson Mason (Bill) of Durham, NC, and grandsons, Robert Morris Mason and William Fallon Mason, survive him. He was predeceased in 2006 by his wife of 41 years, Corella Rawls Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was an attorney and a native of Montgomery, where he and Corella were in the Sidney Lanier High School class of 1960. He graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University, where he was a member and officer of Kappa Alpha Order, and received a master's degree in English literature from the University of Virginia. He received his JD and LLM (taxation) degrees from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was a member of the Alabama Law Review and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Mr. Johnson served as a line officer in the US Navy for 6 years, including service in Vietnam. He also served in the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1987 as a captain.
Mr. Johnson loved his family and had many cherished friends from all over Alabama and the US. He was a dedicated and observant churchman throughout his adult years and had many broad-ranging intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural interests, especially in American and European literature, history, and music.
Arrangements for burial office and memorial service with Holy Communion at a later date at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter in Gadsden, with a reception and visitation afterward in the Great Hall.
