Long-time Montgomery physician and veteran, Dr. Lewis Ruben Gayden, Jr., 82, died peacefully at home Friday, July 19, with his wife, Katherine, by his side.
He will be remembered for his goodness and thoroughly active lifestyle, including scuba diving, snow skiing, running marathons, hunting and fishing, hiking, biking, soccer, and tennis.
Born and raised in Montgomery, Lewis was the first recipient of the Jimmy Hitchcock Award while at Sidney Lanier High School. At Lanier, he was an All-City running back for the Poets and was voted a permanent team captain. After graduating in 1960, he spent four years at the University of Alabama, where he was president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity. He graduated from UAB Medical School in 1968 and after completing his residency in radiology at Emory University, joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a flight surgeon with the 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron at England AFB, Louisiana.
Lewis practiced diagnostic radiology at Jackson Hospital for 38 years. He also volunteered his time and medical expertise to help such diverse groups as the Sioux Nation, Alaskans, and residents of Bangladesh. He was a past Blue Ridge National YMCA Assembly president and served on several local boards. One of his favorite activities was watching whatever sport his sons and grandson happened to be playing.
He was a thoughtful man, always kind and soft-spoken. He loved his family and friends and remained loyal to them for his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Lewis Ruben Gayden and O’ Vaughn Gayden. Survivors include his wife, Katherine Sabel Gayden; two sons, Lewis R. Gayden III and his wife, Sandy and Christopher Redden Gayden; a grandson, Max Lewis Gayden; a step-son, Dr. John Curran Sullivan III and his wife, April; a step-daughter, Brooke Sullivan Bishop and her husband, Alan; five step-grandchildren, Preston, Caroline and Ann Curran Sullivan and Kate and Lee Bishop and a sister, Gloria Gayden Corona.
The Rev. Jay Cooper will conduct A memorial service on Wednesday, July 24 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in Stegall Hall.
Pallbearers will be George Dennis, Barrie Harmon, George Mathews, Grits Morris, Junie Pierce, Jay Smith, Willie Smith and Cliff Thompson.
