In Memory Of Our Poets

Steve Woodie (1955-2023) - Class Of 1973

Stephen "Steve" Randall Woodie was a loving husband, father, grandfather “Dee Daddy”, brother and friend. He left us after a short illness on September 19, 2023, at the age of 67.

Steve was born in Lubbock, Texas to Lloyd “Pop” and Reba Woodie on October 19, 1955. During his childhood, the family lived in several different areas across the U.S. while his parents served in the Air Force. He is a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School, where he met his future wife, Carolyn, in 1973. After attending John Patterson Technical School, he joined the Alabama Air National Guard from which he retired after 24 years. During his time in the Guard, he also worked as a customer service representative and retired in 2017 from Ricoh Companies of America.

Steve adored his two grandchildren, Payton and Hudson. He loved teaching Hudson to play pool and chess and taking him fishing. He enjoyed taking Payton tubing on the lake, riding his MUV, and “kicking it” on the boat. And supported them by attending their various taekwondo, gymnastics, and school activities.

He was often found watching the Atlanta Braves, cheering on the Auburn Tigers, or fishing and boating on the lake. Along with his wife Carolyn, Steve loved spending time on the Gulf enjoying the sun, sand, and seafood. Affectionately called “Woodrow” by his friends in the DMS - some of the most cherished people in his life - he played cards, golfed, and contemplated solutions to the problems of the world.

Steve is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Skelley Woodie; his son, Chris Woodie (Lindsey); and his grandchildren, Payton and Hudson, all of Helena, Alabama. He is also survived by his siblings, Michael Woodie (Anne), Linda Cooley (Bill), Barry Woodie (Jan), and Keith Woodie, all of the greater Atlanta area and Mark “Biz” Woodie, of Nashville, Tennessee; brother-in-law, Charles "Chuck" Skelly (Kaye) of Prattville, Alabama; sister-in-law, Lynda "Lee" Nix (Lloyd) of Montgomery, Alabama; uncle, John Anthony "Tony" Hall (Martha) of Pelham, Alabama; along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly.

Friends are invited to celebrate Steve’s life at Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at 1:00 pm followed by a service at 2:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Jeff Tate.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
